FDM CALCULATOR

Convert filament mass and length

Convert metres to grams or grams to metres using an explicit diameter and density.

Change the inputs, then choose Calculate. Changing an input hides the previous result.

Your inputs

Editable example values · no measurements made by this site.

Each direction retains its own input. Switching direction clears the previous result; rounded results are never copied into an input.
Cylindrical filament
mm
Strictly positive and editable.
g/cm³
1.24 is a calculation assumption, not a universal material or brand value.
Quantity to convert
m
Length to convert into mass; zero is allowed.
g
Net mass; include supports, purge and waste if you want to count them.

Use a decimal point or comma. No thousands separators, exponents or units in fields. Example: 1000.5, not 1,000.5.

Formulas and assumptions

Formulas and assumptions

  • Area A (mm²) = π × (diameter in mm / 2)²
  • Volume (cm³) = A (mm²) × length (m)
  • Mass (g) = volume (cm³) × density (g/cm³)
  • Length (m) = mass (g) / (A (mm²) × density (g/cm³))
  • Unit conversion: 1 m = 1000 mm and 1 cm³ = 1000 mm³. The two factors of 1000 cancel.

No intermediate rounding. Quantities use up to two decimal places, energy three; very small values use scientific notation.

Inputs: zero where allowed, otherwise 0.000001 to 1,000,000,000. Absolute results are limited to 1,000,000,000,000. These technical limits do not describe printer capabilities.

Limitations to consider

  • Filament is modelled as a uniform cylinder with constant diameter and density.
  • Actual diameter, additives and product density can change the result. The prefilled density is an example, not a universal value.
  • Use net filament mass, excluding the empty spool. The two conversion directions retain independent inputs.
