Do not choose a drying cycle from the polymer name alone. Identify the exact product, spool and equipment, then find compatible instructions. Dry storage and heated drying are different operations.

Make a spool record

Record manufacturer, product, formulation, diameter, opening date and storage method. Add the source of drying instructions without substituting another brand’s values. Cardboard spools, plastic spools and refills should not be assumed to tolerate the same treatment.

Prusa highlights domestic oven limitations: temperature regulation and minimum settings may be unsuitable. Its guidance also considers the spool and proper storage after drying. This guide therefore gives no universal temperature/time combination.

Separate the questions

Question Required information What is insufficient
How should the spool be stored? Product instructions and suitable packaging Only saying a dry place
Is drying justified? History and comparable observations One isolated string
Which cycle should be used? Product instructions and spool limits A recipe for another PLA
Is the equipment suitable? Range, regulation and manual Its displayed temperature alone

Do not improvise electrical or thermal modifications. If instructions are unavailable or contradictory, seek manufacturer clarification before heating. Missing guidance is not permission to raise temperature.

Compare without changing everything

Retain the same project, profile, nozzle and comparison conditions. Describe the defect and expected improvement before intervening. If printing temperature and retraction change simultaneously, the result cannot be attributed to drying alone.

After an operation following the instructions, record the actual cycle and storage method. Compare like observations: the same part region, travel move or visual criterion. A different result should be recorded but does not establish one unique cause.

Do not interpret all stringing as moisture

Retraction and travel moves deserve separate analysis. Locate the strings and check the profile before stacking corrections. The PLA and PETG profiles explain differences in formulations and use.

Prepare the next use

Reseal suitable packaging, identify desiccant if specified and keep the spool reference available. Record doubts about storage conditions. This record helps compare your own tests; it does not measure moisture content.

LayerBench3D has not measured spool moisture or validated a dryer for this page. No quantified quality improvement or storage lifetime is guaranteed.
