An FDM profile combines a printer, nozzle, filament and part settings. Start with a compatible profile, then change the setting that addresses your objective. Changing temperature, speed and flow simultaneously makes comparison difficult. The names below follow PrusaSlicer; locations and options vary with software and version.

Distinguish part settings from material settings

Nozzle diameter belongs to the hardware configuration; filament diameter is a different input. Do not interchange them. A filament profile includes temperatures and cooling. A print profile describes layers, walls and infill, among other settings.

Before making a change, save a named project copy and record the original value. Choose a concrete objective: close a top surface more effectively, reduce supports or understand an estimated duration. “Improve the whole print” does not identify a test.

Read the main settings

Setting Documented role Useful preview check
Layer height Slice thickness, vertical detail and duration Stair steps on slopes and layer count
Perimeters Contours forming the walls Actual number of generated lines
Top/bottom solid layers Closing the faces Continuity and closure thickness
Infill Internal structure and support for upper layers Pattern, spacing and connections to walls
Part cooling Solidification, with material-dependent behaviour Affected small layers and bridges

“Layers and perimeters” distinguishes vertical resolution from XY detail: reducing layer height alone does not reduce line width. “Infill” describes internal support; an infill percentage is not a strength certification.

Understand thickness before counting layers

Theoretical geometry at constant height: five 0.20 mm layers represent 1 mm; ten 0.10 mm layers also represent 1 mm. Layer count alone therefore does not describe thickness. A different first layer or variable layers require checking the thickness actually generated.

When comparing a finer profile, retain your wall and closure objectives. Inspect the preview instead of copying only the previous layer counts. A part can retain nominal external dimensions while having a different internal structure.

Temperature and cooling: follow the exact product

“Cooling” describes fan control based on layer time and material-specific exceptions. Do not apply one value to every filament. Distinguish the part-cooling fan from hotend cooling: their functions are not interchangeable.

The PLA reference identifies what to check in a manufacturer profile. Nozzle temperature is not a finished part’s maximum service temperature.

A short comparison procedure

  1. Check the printer, nozzle and filament in the project.
  2. Preserve the original profile under its name.
  3. Choose an observable target and corresponding setting.
  4. Slice again and inspect walls, surfaces and supports.
  5. Compare estimated mass and duration without calling them measurements.
  6. Return to the original profile if the change does not address the question.

If the problem begins at the bed, start with the first layer. For a later defect, use symptom-based diagnosis.
